Youth Mental Health First Aid Course

This 14-hour YMHFA course is aimed at adults helping young people. If you’re a teacher, parent or work with young people, this course is for you. The course can be delivered face to face, over 2 days or 4 x 3.5-hour sessions or via blended online.

Why Complete Youth MHFA Training?

It is estimated that one in four adolescents will meet criteria for some type of mental illness in any given year. Mental health problems often start in adolescence. Though, young people have low rates of help-seeking. As a parent, teacher, coach or family member it’s important to understand the signs and symptoms of common mental illness.

We believe that all teachers, school staff, parents or anyone that works or volunteers with young people should do this course. The course is designed to be accessible to any adult who works, lives or volunteers with young people.

Blended Online Youth Mental Health First Aid Course

This is an online program, delivered in two parts:

  1. A self-directed e-learning component

  2. Followed by 3 x 2.5-hour interactive Zoom online workshops

  3. OR eLearning plus one day face-to-face session

What the course covers:

In Youth Mental Health First Aid training, you'll learn how to spot common mental health issues in young people, provide initial support, connect them with professional help, and offer first aid during crises. *Listed below are the common mental illness and crisis situations covered.

Developing Mental Health Problems Covered

  • Depression

  • Anxiety

  • Psychosis

  • Substance use problems

  • Eating Disorders

Mental Health Crisis Situations Covered:

  • Suicidal thoughts and behaviours

  • Non-suicidal self-injury (deliberate self-harm)

  • Panic attacks

  • Traumatic events

  • Severe effects of drug and alcohol misuse

  • Severe psychotic states

  • Aggressive behaviours

Youth Mental Health First Aid Certificate

Following the completion of the 14 hour course, you can choose to complete a short online quiz. After successfully completing the quiz you will be issued with a Certificate as a Youth Mental Health First Aider. This Certificate is valid for 3 years, after 3 years you will need to complete a 4 hour Refresher course to maintain your accreditation.
